June 8 – 14 Daily Creates

#tdc5143 #ds106 Meaningful object

This daily create prompted us to choose any object in our house that we believe is meaningful to us, and explain why using text and an image/drawing. Although not an object, I chose my cat, Annie!

My cat is meaningful to me because she offers constant companionship and affection. She loves to follow me around and is always nearby. I’m also her favourite person in my house, and I am so lucky that she chose me as her person! She loves to keep me company and entertained with her shenanigans.

This activity primarily connects to the Multimedia Principle, due to the use of the photo and description that describes how the “object” is meaningful to me. Using either text or an image does not deliver the full message to readers. Without the description, it would be unclear how the image is meaningful. The other principal that this activity utilizes is the spatial contiguity principle. Placing the description right next to the image makes it obvious that it is related to the photo. Connecting these media formats (visual and text) enhances understanding of the context. In education, this can help learners better understand concepts and process information.

#tdc5096 #ds106 Boxing Day

For this daily create, we had to think of how we would fill up a box with gifts to give away. The prompt wanted us to decide what I would put into the box, and who I would give it to.

Using my imagination, I thought I would give the box to my friend. I would fill the box with Jellycats, Chipotle bowls, and UBC merch. She goes to the University of British Columbia, so putting in some school swag seemed fitting. I would add in the Chipotle bowls because we love getting Chipotle and going to the beach together. She also collects Jellycats, so I think she would be happy to be gifted a few more!

This daily create connects to the personalization principle. By using “I” and describing what I would choose to put in the box in an unformal and conversational way, I am able to relay information in a more engaging way. In education, these principles can increase motivation and engagement, due to the use of imaginative description.

#tdc5062 #ds106 Word Scaffolding

For this daily create, you were instructed to use an online platform to balance words in the air. I chose the phrase “growth isn’t linear” in hopes that it would kind of align with the use of a scaffold.

This activity utilizes a few multimedia principals. The first one is the signaling principle, due to the fact that the scaffold raises words, acting as a visual cue. This draws the readers attention to each word, increasing the overall message structure. Furthermore, the spatial contiguity principle is at play due to the lack of space between the scaffold and phrase. Having multiple elements (visual and textual), viewers aren’t confused and the information is highlighted in an obvious way.

In education, these principles are particularly important when paired together, as they reduce information overload for learners. Processing is more efficient, due to the fact that learners do not need to split their attention between two things. Instead, they view the image cohesively.
